About

Why this app exists

The short version: we wanted an expense tracker that didn't want anything from us.

Every budgeting app we tried asked for something up front. An email address. A password. A bank login, which is a genuinely strange thing to hand a stranger. And then, once you were in, ads — often for loans and credit cards, shown to someone who had just admitted they were worried about money.

None of that is necessary to write down what you spent on groceries. So Moneymalist does the opposite: no account, no server, no ads, no trackers. Your data sits on your phone, in the app’s own storage, and it stays there unless you personally send a backup to your own Google Drive.

What “minimalist” means here

Not sparse. Not grey. It means the app doesn’t ask you for anything it doesn’t need — not your data, not your attention, and not fifteen minutes of setup before it does anything useful.

You’ll still get eight themes, custom categories, charts, and a home screen that looks like someone cared. Being private and being nice to use were never in conflict.

About the name

Moneymalist — money, minimalist. The icon is an M split down the middle: green on one side, red on the other. Money coming in, money going out. That’s the whole app in one letter.

Every spend tells a story

A list of transactions isn’t really a list of transactions. It’s the month you travelled, the month things got tight, the month you finally cooked at home. You can’t read any of that back if nobody wrote it down.

That’s the job: give you somewhere to write it down that’s quick enough to actually keep using, and private enough that you never have to think about who else is reading.

Who’s behind it

A very small team, building this because we use it. There’s no growth team, no investors asking about engagement metrics, and no plan to sell to an ad network. Some people pay for Premium, and that’s what keeps it going.

And we'd like to hear from you

A good chunk of what’s in the app started as somebody’s email. If it doesn’t handle the way you budget, or something’s broken, or you just have an opinion — tell us. That’s how this gets better.

Still need a hand?

Email us and a person who works on the app will read it — usually within 2 business days.
